On Friday, November 15 Barbara Cieply shared her late mother Regina Kleinberg-Cieply’s gripping story of survival during the Holocaust through a special Zoom presentation broadcast to all 500 students at Royal Vale High School in NDG.
Regina was just 12 years old when she escaped the Warsaw Ghetto. She found refuge with total strangers, assuming various non-Jewish identities to survive.
A member of the school presentation program team from The Foundation for Genocide Education, Barbara encouraged the students to make connections between the Holocaust and contemporary instances of hate and intolerance. The presentation also featured a ceremony to commemorate the 86th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass, when Jewish businesses and synagogues were attacked and burned to the ground, setting the stage for the Holocaust.
